Release of Taels of the Heisty Vixens

I am finally leaving a devlog a week after the release of the game. Taels of the Heisty Vixens is the game I made for #FolkloreJam. You play as Vixens, people imbued with the powers of the fox spirits from Chinese folklore, going on heists in a city ruled by colonisers.

It's a PbtA/FitD game, with the core mechanics more closely resembled that of a PbtA game, but I've taken certain bits from Blades in the Dark such as the mission based structure and downtime play. And the game itself is inspired by late-19th/early-20th century history, the same period that influenced the steampunk setting in Blades in the Dark.

I thought of calling it Tales of the Heisty Vixens, and then changed Tales to Tails, and finally settled on Taels. Tales and Tails are both self-explanatory. Tael is a measurement of weight used for silver in ancient China, similar to the British pound.

Direct confrontation are meant to be avoided in this game, which is why combat is brutal. This is a heist game and not a fighting game, and the Vixens don't have to roll for Brawl when they are backstabbing their target.

There are some things I wanted to include but ran out of the time and pages (both of which are limits I set as the Jam host XD). When I run PbtA games, I rarely look at the MC moves, which is why they did not make it to the firsts version, but I do plan to put a MC guide into the game later on. I also have plans to write a few example heists in the future.

I bought this game a while back and I can't tell you how much we love it!   It's a perfect light pbta hack that lets my player(s) be anything from foxy people to anthro foxes.   It plays fast, fun and if you lean into the drama - crates a series of memorable adventures that feel a lot like Studio Ghibli movies.

Thank you! :)
